Social Media for Learning framework

Andrew Middleton and Sue Beckingham present the SM4L framework v1. The framework allows us to understand how social media have a role in extending the way students engage with their learning and develop their identity. We invite your comments on the SM4L framework using the comments form at the bottom of this page.

Here we talk through the key ideas presented as a set of workshop cards

Here are just the slides if you don’t have 14 minutes.

Can you develop this?

  • Please critique the framework. How can it be improved?
  • Please provide examples of how social media are being used in post compulsory education and suggest how your example maps to the framework.

Below is the presentation that Sue gave at MELSIG in Liverpool at our Social Media for Learning event. The presentation begins to add examples of the things people use and the things people do.

What are we planning to do next?

After we’ve had a break (BYOD4L was exhilerating and exhausting!)…

We will take the framework with your comments to the next MELSIG event at the University of Sussex where Andrew will run a CoLab in relation to the event’s theme of Interactivity and Inclusivity. What issues does the framework help raise about SM4L, in particular if social media crosses formal divides should we be concerned about educational anarchy? Is SM4L about trivialising engagement? Help us role out the nay-sayers’ concerns so we can give them due consideration 🙂
